Our Adoption Journey (Part One)

Today marks the anniversary of the day we began an amazing journey. Three years ago, on August 31, 2004, Shannon and I boarded a plane bound for Moscow, Russia. We awoke that morning with the anticipation and excitement of children on Christmas morning. This was not just any trip. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in the life of our family.

Almost two years earlier, God began to tender our hearts toward the idea of adopting a child. We had been blessed with our beautiful daughter, Anna Katherine, in 1997. Years went by, and we had just assumed that in time we would eventually have more children. Little did we know the amazing plan God had ordained for us.

It was Christmas Day, 2003, when Shannon announced to me that he wanted us to begin the process to adopt a child. We’d attended an international adoption seminar and had spoken with other adoptive parents over the course of a year. It truly was incredible the way God allowed so many opportunities to “open our eyes” to the gift of adoption. The most memorable time was when we attended a Steven Curtis Chapman concert in our hometown in September, 2002. Although we had always loved his music, I was most excited about hearing Nichole Nordemann, who performed the opening concert. However, mid-way through Chapman’s concert, he shared a testimony of their adoption of a little Korean girl. He began singing this song as a video played in the background. At first, it showed this precious little girl walking all alone on a beach. Then it showed her walking hand-in-hand with her new Mommy & Daddy. I can’t even begin to describe the emotions Shannon and I both felt that night. Ironically, we had just attended an international adoption seminar a few weeks before. And wouldn’t you know, it was sponsored by the same agency that the Chapman’s had used to adopt their daughter.

We realize looking back that nothing was accidental over the course of that next year. We’d chuckle each time we’d have an encounter with someone who had experienced adoption and openly shared their story with us. It wasn’t that we found it humorous, but we just couldn’t help but see God at work. We’d asked Him to show us some signs, and He not only provided them, He made certain they were in bold print with neon colors. It became obvious that He wasn’t trying to keep us from having more children….He just had a different route than we had anticipated. And we’re so very grateful He did!!!

We signed up with an agency in late January, 2004, and 7 months later, we were on our way to meet our son. From the moment we saw his picture, we knew he was meant to be ours. And as we made our way over the Atlantic on this night 3 years ago, we couldn’t even fathom how much that little guy would change our lives. So over the course of the next few weeks, I plan to dedicate a series of posts on our adoption journey. I’m mainly doing this for Ben’s sake, so that he will have all of the details in writing. But I also know that, thanks to my “blog patrol,” folks from all over the U.S. and the world somehow “accidentally” connect to this site. My hope is that these recollections will inspire some other family out there to take a leap of faith, and, like Peter, be willing to get out of the boat and let God do the rest.

There are two reasons we boarded that plane 3 years ago:

#1) God told us to.

#2) See photo below.

I just want to scoop him up and kiss him!

I can’t wait to read more. My husband and I have been discussing adoption for a while now. We missed the adoption meeting we wanted to go to… but I’m sure that was part of God’s plan somehow.

We have three boys and would love to have at least one more. 🙂

    God bless you!

Thank you for sharing this story. My husband and I have been praying for a child via adoption for about 7 years. We had a not great experience adopting two little boys from the US – but were blessed with about a month with the little guys — who taught us a TON about parenting, about ourselves, our marriage, and how much we could love. This January we rec’d a call from our attorney overseas that a birth mom had chosen us. Long story short, we are now waiting for our daughter Daniela to be born (she is due June 22) and then the wait for our permission to fly and pick her up (I’m told 40 days or so). When we began telling people, so many left discouraging words (“you’ll never be able to bring her home”, “how can you know the birth mom won’t change her mind”, etc.). Your story is encouraging..thank you. I really needed to hear/read it. God is a truly wonderful and awesome Father and continues to bless me and my family. I pray He continues to use you to touch the lives of people like me and that He abundantly blesses your family.
